King Abdulaziz University emerged from the womb of society, where it was founded by the initiative of a group of dignitaries and businessmen, led by Sheikh Muhammad Abu Bakr Bakhashab Pasha, who donated the amount of one million riyals as first installment of the university on 24/7/1964 G., followed by a public ceremony held on15 / 10/ 1964 G . to open campaign of donation to the University as the total of voluntary contributions by members of the royal family and decent citizens reached 4,122,780 Riyals, and contributions continued to reach the amount of 4,595,240 Riyals, and then Sheikh Abdullah AlSulaiman AlHamdan donated a piece of land of fifty thousand seven hundred square meters with the facilities on it for the university buildings on 8/7/1965 G.

- The University prepared a strategic plan for scientific research sector for the period from 2002 - 2014 G. whose main pivots are dependent on:
1. University's involvement in building a knowledge-based economy
2. Investment of points distinguishing the University
3. Activation of partnership with all sectors of society
- The objective pursued by the university through this strategic plan is recognition of the scientific communities and the sides whose assessment is counted in the distinction in scientific research of the university in all areas of choice in this strategic plan.
- Regarding the implementation of this plan, the university depends on its preparations, distinct mechanisms and equipment for scientific research represented in:
- More than a hundred specialized scientific sections, including the unique scientific sections, such as the University's Aerospace Engineering, nuclear engineering, mining engineering, geology and environmental engineering.
- Several specialized research centers such as the Center for Water Research, King Fahd Center for Medical Research, Islamic Economics Research Center, Agricultural Research Station in Huda Al Sham, the Center for Research and Development, Center for Research in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
- Institute of Research and Consultancy: It takes on providing experts to conduct the required research and consultancy in the field of strategic planning and restructuring of the private sector.
- Academic staff: The University embraces selected outstanding scientific manpower of more than 1,200 faculty members in various scientific specializations obtaining the highest academic degrees from the American and European universities.
- Research Staff: There are nearly two thousand students at the university in higher education, who act as research support staff.
