Abstract : In the past few years, HPV has been shown to be the first necessary cause of a human cancer. It is now well established that specific sexually transmitted HPV types play a central role in ano-genital carcinogenesis, especially in carcinoma of the uterine cervix, on the basis of virologic, epidemiologic and experimental data. Genital HPV types have been subdivided into low-risk types, which are found mainly in genital warts, and high-risk types, which are frequently associated with high-grade dysplasia and invasive cervical cancer. The significantly elevated prevalence of individual HPV types in cancers compared with the normal population led to the concept of HPVs carcinogenic potential. Studies show that HPV DNA is found in 99.7% of all cervical carcinomas and cells derived from those cancers (Walboomers et al. 1999). The human papillomavirus (HPV) seems to be involved in the pathogenesis of approximately 15% of human malignancies. However, in the past, the involvement of HPV infection in the development of prostate cancer has been controversial. Previously, highly variable frequencies ranging between 2% and 53% have been reported for the delectability of HPV 16 DNA in tissue obtained from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer specimens ( Kuczyk1 et al. 2000) . The recognition of high-risk HPVs as etiological agents has increased the demands to use testing for HPV in biopsy from high-grade dysplasia and invasive cervical cancer (Kulmala et al. 2004) and prostatic cancer. The present study aimed to detect HPV DNA by molecular tests in BPH and prostate cancer.
